Work from Home Office Success

Posted By admin on September 24, 2011

As a work from home entrepreneur, you will want to make sure and have a place where you can focus and be productive in your work from home business. You will need a home office or at least some space where you can get your work done with little or no interruptions. But not every home has room or space to be able to do this. But with a little creativity you can create something that will meet your needs.

Here are some tips and strategies to help you create a productive workspace.

First – What Do You Need to Keep Handy

What do you need to keep handy for your daily or weekly use? For examples files, paperwork, equipment. Of course if your business requires computer usage, you’ll want to have your computer easily accessible. How about a printer, scanner, fax machine and phone.
You may have certain paperwork or books that you need to access daily or weekly, so of course you’ll want those close buy. So perhaps a small file cabinet will do the job to keep those items within easy reach. Any other books, files that you don’t need on a regular basis you could keep elsewhere in the house.

For example in my workspace I have a computer desk which has my computer, printer, photo scanner, few binders with stuff I’m working on in them and some books I review regularly. But my big file cabinet as well as other books and magazines I review periodically are in my fitness room.

Second — Prevent Clutter

Prevent Clutter – ok, I had to say that a second time, cause I do have a tendency to collect stuff. But I’m getting better. Having too much clutter hampers your productivity. If you have to continually look for something because of clutter, your just wasting time.
So make sure and create a system for organizing your paperwork. Invest in a filing cabinet. We recently went to a business yard sale and picked up a nice 2nd file cabinet for little of nothing. If you don’t need hard copies of all that paper how about scanning it and saving it on the computer (quick note: don’t forget to back up whatever you save on your computer regularly, in case it crashes – I know). I recently bought a portable handheld scanner that I could take with me when we travel. It’s also great for my home office (watch for my review on it coming soon).

Use calendars, I not only use the calendar on my computer but I have a small pocket calendar that I carry to put my appointments and notes in until I can add them to the computer.

Third — Do Not Disturb

If you have your own home office with a door, make sure and explain to family and friends that when the door is closed your working and to not disturb you.

If you home office is where family and friends are you will either have to make sure and set clear boundaries or set your work hours for when the kids are asleep or at school.

Another suggestion that works here, is to put earphones on, this lets my family know I’m working. They think I’m busy listening to a webinar or something so generally don’t interrupt me. So you don’t have to be listening to anything, just give the impression. Give it a try it may work.

Finally – Be Comfortable

Make your workspace comfortable for you. If your workspace is uncomfortable, you may find it hard to focus and be productive. Go ahead invest a little more for that office chair and be comfortable.
