4 Golden Rules of Building a Profitable Website Online

If you’re building your first website but aren’t sure where to begin, our Golden Rules of website design will get you started on the right foot.
Here are some top website building tips:
Keep it Simple:
This is one of the top golden rules of building a profitable website online. If your website is overly busy and confusing, you’re going to lose the reader. Your best option is to stay away from background images, overuse of pictures, flashing images, music, and anything that will distract your visitor from your ultimate goal.
If in doubt, when it comes to website design less is certainly more.
Add Personality:
There are so many generic sites on the web, who needs another one of those? Instead stand out by adding a little of your personality to your website. Let visitors know that there’s a real person behind the site. You can do this by including an “about us” section and adding a few pictures and some details about the people behind the site.
Make Sure and Communicate Effectively:
Forget the lessons your English teacher taught you. Online writing should be casual, friendly and easy-to-read. To communicate effectively with your readers, write as though you were chatting with a friend over a cup of coffee. Keep the wording simple and don’t use “flowery” or “complex” language.
Here are three ways to really make your words count:
> Break up your text into short, well-spaced paragraphs. This will make it easier for your visitor to read.
> Use bullet points and subheadings. Many people online skim rather than read. By using strong bullet points and subheadings you let the skimmer read the information in a summarized way.
> Write in short, punchy sentences. A good rule of thumb is to write and then go back and remove any words that really don’t add anything to the writing. Short, active and punchy sentences do a better job of grabbing the reader’s attention.
Use Proper Structure:
A good website is one that not only makes it easy for your visitors to find all the information they need quickly but also one that is easily found by search engines. A key way to please both your human visitors and the search engines is to use a clear navigation structure throughout your website.
Think of it like a three tier cake. The main tier includes all your main categories which of course are based around your keywords. Say you have a parenting toddlers website then some of your main tier keywords would be:
Toddler Tantrums
Toddler Education
Toddler Playtime
Etc.
These main categories will be placed on the home page of your website.
Your second tier will consist of further information for each category. For example, “toddler tantrums” will link to a second tier page which discusses different ways of handling toddler tantrums, etc.
Finally your third tier pages or your “deep” pages will provide additional information on more specific areas related to “toddler tantrums.”
A clear navigation structure is key to helping the search engines find your website and also to ensuring your visitors can find everything they need easily. A full site map which you link to from every page on your website is also very helpful.
Follow the top golden rules of good website design and you’ll be on your way to building a profitable, thriving website.
